Vasco Da Gama Pillar | Excursions of Kola Beach Resort

What's cool around Kola Beach Resort | Vasco da Gama Pillar

"Built in 1498 amid Muslim resistance, Vasco da Gama pillar is one of the oldest European installations in Africa

Designed using ancient Portuguese architecture, the Vasco da Gama Pillar along the Kenyan coast in Malindi has stood the test of time and is one of the oldest tributes to history.

Did you know that the Vasco da Gama pillar, which stands majestically on a cliff, is the second one built by the seafarer — Vasco da Gama — in the same town? The first pillar was erected near the Sultan’s palace.

Malindi, just like Mombasa and Lamu, is among the oldest towns in Kenya. It was strategically placed as a sea route to traders to and from the East Coast of Africa.

Vasco da Gama arrived in Kenya in his endeavour to find a sea route to India.
He was welcomed cordially by the Sultan of Malindi who was then not on talking terms with the Sultan of Mombasa.
Tour guide Josephine Kinyamasyo says because Malindi was Muslim dominated, the Muslim and Christian animosity that reigned could not allow the pillar to stand.
Muslims demolished it because it had a cross, which was seen as encouraging Christianity.
Kinyamasyo says after the demolition of the initial pillar, Vasco da Gama explained to the sultan why the pillar was important and it was then that he was allowed to build the present one on the cliff where it stands.

Today, many visitors to the Coast just see it as a monument, but in real sense it was a landmark that could be seen from far off — more like a lighthouse with no lights at night."

Excursions of Kola Beach Resort | Gedi Ruins

What's cool near Kola Beach Resort | Gede Ruins

The Ruins of Gedi are the remains of a Swahili town located in Gedi, a village near the coastal town of Malindi in Kenya.
From the 13th or 14th to 17th centuries, Gedi was a thriving community along the jungle coast of East Africa. Although no written record exists of this town, excavations between 1948 and 1958 revealed that the Muslim inhabitants traded with people from all over the world. Some of the findings included beads from Venice, coins and a Ming vase from China, an iron lamp from India, and scissors from Spain. The population was estimated to exceed at least 2500 people. These items can be found in the museum in the complex which was opened in 2000.
Gedi had a mosque, a palace, and large stone houses. These houses were complex for their time, with bathrooms with drains and overhead basins to flush toilets. The city's streets were laid out at right angles and had drainage gutters. There are also wells which supplied water to the community. The material used to construct the buildings was made from coral reef from the nearby ocean.

In the early 16th century, the village was abandoned. A possible explanation was that a punitive expedition came from Mombasa against Malindi and forced the inhabitants to leave. A temporary reoccupation likely occurred by the nomadic Oromo tribe from Somalia in the late 16th century, who later abandoned the town.
It is unclear whether the actual name of the town was Gedi, Gede, or Kilimani. The Oromo word "Gede" means "precious", but the town might have been named after the last Oromo leader to camp on the site.
The area was gazetted as a National Monument in 1927. In 1948, the remains of Gedi were declared a Kenyan national park. The ruins continue to be a popular tourist destination. Recently a tree house has been constructed in the center of the complex, around a giant tree near the main palace ruins. The site is usually open till 6 pm. There is also a small shop to buy drinks and souvenirs. The site is inhabited by guenon monkeys, which frequently interact with visitors.
According to local tradition, the ruins are protected by the spirits of its priests. These "Old Ones" supposedly curse anyone who harms the site or removes anything.

The Origins

Everything in our place make sense, a pleasure, an emotion.
For example: the name "Kola", that in Swahili language means "shell", has a specific meaning for Us. Everyone of us, could have been traveled around the World for one or more than one time. The reason of our travel can be not only a vacation, but also any other reason and anyway, many people love to bring home local objects from the visited place, the "souvenirs".
That objects are usually less important with the passing of time. But if you observe the shell "kola", after many years you probably feel the desire to put it close to your ear and like magic you can hear the sound of the sea.
Trough hearing your shell, if you have been at the Kola Beach Resort, you can live another time the same sensation, the same pleasure and you can feel the same emotion you felt in the past in your journey at Kola

The "Gold55" name is inspired from the endless Gold Beach; "gold", where the restaurant is located and 55 is the year of born of two of the three owners of the village. Three men who one day decided to give the emotions, the pleasures, and the sensations they are experiencing by living in that magic place, as a present to everyone decides to spend time at the Kola Beach Resort.
Everything is make giving privilege to the quality of the service offered.

Thank you for experiencing with us this magic African Moments
